RCMP in Strathcona County said a male high school student was arrested, and his school was temporarily put on lockdown, after receiving reports a student had been seen with a handgun Thursday afternoon.

Police said just after noon, officers received reports that a student may have been seen with a handgun in the area of Emerald Drive in Sherwood Park.

Reports indicated the student went to Bev Facey High School, and appeared to be returning to school.

The school was put on lockdown as a precaution.

Police on the scene found and arrested a male student outside of the school, and found a toy gun.

Police said the school ended up being on lockdown for about half an hour.

As a result of the incident, police are reminding students over the dangers of bringing fake or toy weapons to school, as it places themselves and others in danger.
