Edmonton police have released the name of the city's first homicide victim of 2012.

Police say the body of Welid Sahle Meskel, 22, was found in a north end alley near 134 Avenue and 101 Street early Sunday morning.

After an autopsy Tuesday, the Medical Examiner officially ruled Meskel's death a homicide.

Police haven't said the exact cause of death, however reports have indicated it was a head wound of unknown origin.

Homicide detectives were brought in to investigate Sunday morning after a resident reported an injured man lying in an alley around 4:45 AM.
