On Tuesday, RCMP were still at the scene of a gruesome find in the town of Calmar.

Human remains were found early Monday evening near the town, located 35 kilometres southwest from Edmonton.

Investigators from the RCMP's "K Division" have not provided any details regarding an age or gender of the body found.

Officers were holding the scene Tuesday morning, and said the investigation was in the early stages, but foul play was not being ruled out.

Police said “it will be some time” before investigators can give an assessment of what might have taken place in the area.

Residents told CTV News police were canvassing the area, asking residents if they had seen anything suspicious. Some said the area is popular with geo cachers, and hikers.

One resident told CTV News she heard loud sounds, like banging or popping.

“It was definitely Saturday night that we heard the boom boom boom,” Betty, who chose to not provide her last name, said. “They weren’t really close to one another, there was one, and a pause, then another one, then it went quiet for a little bit, and then there was another one.”

Others said RCMP were asking about a homeless man that lived in the area.

More details on the incident are expected Wednesday.
