First Nations leaders along with City of Edmonton and EPCOR officials held a special pipe ceremony Wednesday afternoon, followed by the re-burying of human remains near the Rossdale Power Plant.

In August and September, human remains were unearthed on two separate locations during expansion of the area.

EPCOR consulted with First Nations elders who helped pinpoint potential historic burial sites, as well as verify the findings. Both sides came up with a plan to repatriate the remains to the Fort Edmonton Traditional Burial Site.

There has been a lot of extra attention given to this site in recent years, seeing how the construction of the new Walterdale Bridge was being built close to it.

Wednesday’s ceremony helped re-bury the remains in a respectful and cultural way at the traditional burial site.
