The family of a man brutally beaten in the bathroom in a south Edmonton pub in 2012 was in court Wednesday, to hear the sentence for the man convicted in the attack.

In court Wednesday, Dale Carter was sentenced to four years behind bars in connection to the February 2012 attack that left Scott Allnutt suffering from serious injuries.

“It is a test to this family and our ability to recover and be strong and persevere,” Allnutt said outside of court after the sentence was handed down.

The night of the attack, Allnutt had been at Hudson’s to celebrate his sister’s birthday.

He went to the restroom, and his family found him a short time later beaten beyond recognition and lying in a pool of his own blood.

Justice Dixon said in court that Carter’s reliance on marijuana and alcohol, and how his substance abuse made him more aggressive – and how court heard he has little recollection of the attack, along with Carter’s apology, were all taken into account in the decision.

Meanwhile, Allnutt’s healing continues – he had to re-learn how to walk and talk, and said his life was changed forever in the attack.

“I now face a life sentence, this problem won’t ever go away,” Allnutt said. “So all we can do is try to band together and recover.”

With credit for time served, Carter will spend another 2 years and four months behind bars in a federal penitentiary.
