Police in Lacombe said two civilians worked together over the weekend to rescue a bird that had got itself stuck on a sign.

Lacombe police said officers were called to an area in downtown Lacombe, where a gull was reportedly in distress on Saturday at about 10 a.m.

When officers arrived, they determined the gull had one of its feet stuck in the flashing of the sign, the bird was hanging upside down and couldn’t free itself.

At the scene, police said two citizens: Jeff Pollard, a plumber, and Romeo Staub, a retired commercial sign installer, offered to help free the bird.

Pollard offered his commercial extension ladder, and Staub offered to climb the 30 foot ladder and free the bird.

Lacombe Police Chief Steve Murray said the incident was an example of some of the more unique calls police receive.

“Citizens saw an animal in distress and thanks to these two community-minded gentlemen, the situation was successfully resolved,” Murray said in a statement.
