Hollywood heartthrob Leonardo DiCaprio is the latest celebrity to be spotted in the region of Alberta’s oil sands.

Several photos have surfaced of the Hollywood actor in the Fort McMurray and Fort Chipewyan region. According to reports, DiCaprio, a self-proclaimed environmentalist, is doing research for a future project. There are no details available about the project, but the most recent video funded by the “Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation” blasts the oil sands and calls for a carbon tax.

While DiCaprio’s views on the oil sands may be negative, Alberta Environment is welcoming the twice nominated Oscar star, and the dialogue that they hope will come along with his visit to the region.

“I think Albertans are interested in protecting our environment that same as anybody else” Alberta Environment spokesperson Katrina Bluetchen said Friday. “If people come here to visit and to learn more about us, to learn more about our resources and to learn more about the steps that we take to help protect our environment, we think that’s really a positive.”

Other celebrity activists to visit the oil sands in recent years include Neil Young, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and James Cameron.
