Less than ten minutes after the election polls closed in Alberta, the CTV News Election Desk projected Trudeau will lead the country with a new Liberal government.

The Liberal Party will form a majority government, knocking the Conservatives out of power and into the role of Official Opposition. The win is historic for the Liberals, who are leaping from third place to the seat of power.

"I’ve been in opposition. I’ve been in government and of course it’s a privilege to be in both. But opposition is actually a lot more fun," said Rona Ambrose, following her victory in Sturgeon River- Parkland. Ambrose has represented the Spruce Grove area since 2004.

"Here in Alberta, the results I’m seeing is our Conservative message resonated with Albertan," said Ambrose.

Tight race:

Two Edmonton ridings were extremely close. In the Mill Woods riding, Liberal candidate  Amarjeet Sohi won by only 80 votes against Conservative candidate Tim Uppal.

Meantime in the Edmonton Centre riding, the Liberal's Randy Boissonnault won by about 1,200 votes.

Voter turnout:

Turnout in Alberta was significantly higher than it was in the previous federal election. About 68 per cent of eligible voters in Alberta cast a ballot in this election, compared to 52.3 per cent in 2011.

Government reaction:

Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson tweeted: "Edmonton Council looks forward to working with Justin Trudeau's new government on transit, infrastructure, housing & reconciliation.”

In a statement, Premier Rachel Notley said: “I would like to congratulate Prime Minister designate Justin Trudeau on his electoral victory. I look forward to working collaboratively with him to build a strong Alberta within a strong Canada."
