The man who killed a worker in his group home in 2012 was sentenced Friday as an adult.

Travis Scheerschmidt, now 21, had earlier pleaded guilty in youth court to second-degree murder for the stabbing death of Dianne McClements.

McClements, 61, was found stabbed to death in the basement of a group home in Camrose in May 2012.

Court heard Scheerschmidt stole McClements’ car, and drove to Vermilion – where he confessed that he had killed McClements to a number of people.

On Friday, Scheerschmidt was handed a life sentence, after the judge ruled he should serve a sentence as an adult. He will be eligible for parole after serving seven years.
