CTV News has learned Linda Sloan, a two-term Edmonton City Councillor, will be retiring from politics, and won’t seek re-election in the autumn municipal election.

The Ward 1 councillor was set to make her announcement early Friday afternoon.

She was first elected to council in 2004, after serving two terms in provincial politics between 1997 and 2001.

Before going into politics, she worked as a Registered Nurse.

In a press release, Sloan said the decision came after a ‘period of reflection’.

She had announced previously in June that she would seek reelection.

Sloan’s decision means there will be a number of fresh faces on council after the election in October, with only six incumbent councilors.

In recent months, three other members: Councillors Kim Krushell and Jane Batty, and Mayor Stephen Mandel, have all announced they won’t seek reelection.

Three current councilors, Don Iveson, Kerry Diotte, and Karen Leibovici, have announced they will seek election as mayor.

Edmontonians will go to the polls October 21.
