Mounties say a man is facing dangerous driving charges after he was caught driving 178 km/h on Highway 63.

Police say the driver of a Ford Mustang was caught driving 178 km/h in a 100 km/h posted zone on Highway 63 north of Boyle on Wednesday just before 5 p.m.

RCMP officers and members of the Boyle Integrated Traffic Unit were conducting traffic enforcement on Highway 63 at the time and were initially able to stop the Mustang, but police say the vehicle then drove off before it could be intercepted.

The Mustang was located about 30 kilometres south of Fort McMurray a few hours later, still travelling northbound on Highway 63.

A 51-year-old Sundre man is now facing Criminal Code charges of dangerous operation of motor vehicle, flight from peace officer as well as Traffic Safety Act charges of speeding 50+ kilometres over the posted speed limit and failing to remain stopped until permitted to leave by peace officer.

The man is scheduled to appear in Boyle court on Oct. 23.

Boyle is located about 150 kilometres north east of Edmonton.
