An 18-year-old man from Calgary has been charged after a collision involving a school bus in central Alberta.

On Thursday, Sylvan Lake RCMP responded to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 20 and Aspelund Road near Sylvan Lake.

The collision involved a full-sized SUV and a 72-passenger school bus belonging to the Red Deer Catholic School Division.

Police say the bus was travelling south on Highway 20 at Aspelund Road when the SUV, which was traveling west, crossed Aspelund Road before it was safe to do so.

The driver of the bus, along with two students, was transported to hospital by ambulance with minor injuries.

Police say quick reaction from the bus driver limited the amount of injuries for students on board.

The driver of the SUV, Brandon Buchanan, 18, has been charged with failing to proceed safely at an intersection.
