RCMP east of Edmonton have laid charges in connection to the death of an Edmonton woman in the summer of 2008.

The investigation began on June 5, 2008, when a homeowner living in the Belvedere Heights subdivision found his dog with what looked like a human skull in a wooded area.

Police were called, and found more remains elsewhere in the area.

In December 2008, the Medical Examiner identified the remains as Shannon Maureen Collins.

Collins was reported missing to Edmonton police by her family in September 2008 – police said she was known to have lived a high-risk lifestyle.

On Friday, RCMP said Shawn Lee Wruck, 39, had been arrested in Kelowna, B.C. and was facing a charge of first degree murder.

“They knew each other, I think I’ll leave it at that,” Supt. Gary Steinke with Strathcona County RCMP said. “This will all come out in court, and that might become a piece that’s important, or not important to the Crown, so I don’t want to mess things up for them.”

Wruck was taken into custody Thursday, and police said they were in the process of transporting him back to Alberta – so the date of his first court appearance had not been scheduled.
