Edmonton police said Thursday that a man in his 30s has been charged in connection to the fall 2015 death of a gas station clerk, following a beating in the city’s southeast.

On Friday, October 23, 2015, Edmonton Police Service Southeast Division officers were called to a gas station in the area of 75 Avenue and 50 Street, at about 3:30 p.m.

Reports indicated a male customer had become involved in a physical altercation with a male employee – paramedics treated the employee at the scene and took him to hospital with life threatening injuries.

Five days later, the employee died in hospital – an autopsy determined Surinder Pal Singh, 61, dies as a result of head trauma. At that point, the EPS Homicide Unit took over the investigation.

On Wednesday, June 8, police said the male customer involved in the incident, Douglas Joseph Chestnut, 34, had been charged with manslaughter.
