Mayerthorpe RCMP said Monday that a man had been charged in the weekend shooting death of a woman.

RCMP said Giovanni James Alexis, 20, had been arrested and was facing a number of charges.

Alexis was arrested in connection to the death of Shawna Paul, a 34-year-old woman who was found dead inside of a vehicle just outside the Alexis Nakota First Nation early Sunday morning.

Police said an autopsy confirmed Paul died as a result of a single gunshot wound.

Alexis is facing seven charges., including manslaughter with a firearm, criminal negligence causing death, careless use of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, pointing a firearm, possession of a firearm while prohibited and breach of probation.

Alexis is expected to appear in a Mayerthorpe courtroom on Thursday, February 12.
