Edmonton police said Monday that charges had been laid against a man in his 20s for the death of a woman whose body was found after fire broke out in a home.

Police said Juan Rolan Checkel, 24, was charged Friday with first degree murder, possession of an offensive weapon and arson to property.

He is charged in the slaying of Genevieve Lucienne Auger, 32, whose body was found after a house fire in the area of 173 Street and 77 Avenue on Wednesday, October 1.

Officials said later that Auger was beaten and stabbed to death.

EPS said officers found and arrested the suspect, who lived in the same home as Auger, was taken into custody early Thursday, October 2 at the Century Park LRT Station parking lot.

He is expected to appear in court Wednesday morning.
