RCMP said a man in his 60s had died, after a collision on Highway 63 forced police to shut the busy roadway down Monday afternoon.

Wood Buffalo RCMP reported Monday that a southbound gravel truck and a northbound pickup truck had collided head-on at about 2 p.m. that day, on Highway 63 at kilometre marker 190.

Investigators said Tuesday that the pickup truck had crossed the centre line, just before the collision. The driver of that truck, identified only as a 66-year-old man from Ontario, was deceased when emergency crews arrived.

The driver of the other truck was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The highway was shut down in both directions for eight hours Monday, reopening at about 10 p.m.
