A man was declared dead on scene after a three-vehicle collision in north Edmonton Sunday morning, Edmonton police said.

Around 9 a.m., police said a 39-year-old man driving a grey Honda Accord southbound in the centre lane on 66 Street at Fort Road allegedly switched into the right lane and rear-ended a black Chevrolet Impala and killed its 58-year-old driver.

The Impala veered of the road and the Accord went into the northbound curb lane and hit a white Hyundai Santa Fe Sport head-on.

A 55-year-old woman and an eight-year-old girl were inside the Hyundai SUV, and they, along with the driver of the Accord, were treated and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, EPS said.

“Is speed a factor? Yes,” EPS Sgt. James McLeod said. “There's no doubt that anyone looking at any pictures or video of this can determine that speed was a factor … This is a catastrophe in essence.”

66 Street re-opened around 6 p.m., and LRT operations in the area have resumed earlier in the afternoon.

“We’re looking to speak with the driver of a small, white sedan which was also seen travelling southbound on 66 Street alongside the vehicles involved in the collision,” McLeod said in a press release.

Police said it’s unclear whether alcohol or drugs played a factor in the collisions.

This is Edmonton’s fourth traffic fatality of 2017.
