It’s a film experience Fred Thompson admits he’s never had, but he’s hoping to bring it back to Edmonton this summer.

“It’s been a long time since people have been able to go to the drive-in, a lot of people my age have never been,” Thompson, 25, said.

Thompson is the founder of Silver Spur Outdoor Movie Company, and he’s looking to bring the drive-in movie theatre experience back to Edmonton, twelve years after the last permanent drive-in theatre shut down.

As for this new version, Thompson’s idea is a little different – the theatre is portable, and can be set up in any space that’s large enough.

“We have a couple bookings coming up in June, one in Breton, Alberta, and one in Warburgh,” Thompson said.

The screen, Thompson said is about 40 feet wide and 22 feet tall, with movie-goers listening in on an FM radio station.

The entrepreneur hopes this venture will indicate whether a permanent drive-in might be worth investing in.

“This is a good way to gauge the market and see how people like it.”
