The man who pleaded guilty to charges stemming from a violent attack on a woman in her 60s two years ago has learned his fate.

In an Edmonton courtroom on Monday, the young man charged in the bloody January, 2012 attack on a woman in her 60s was sentenced to nine years behind bars.

The 20-year-old was 17 when he attacked a 62-year-old woman, who was walking near 93 Street and 103 Avenue on January 10, 2012.

Police said the teen attacked, sexually assaulted, and robbed the woman, leaving her unconscious, hypothermic and bleeding heavily – she was found by residents of a nearby home about two hours later.

The teen, who can’t be named due to a publication ban, was charged with aggravated sexual assault and robbery.

He later pleaded guilty to the charges.

Shortly after the bloody incident, the Crown pushed for the accused to be sentenced as an adult.

In court on Monday, victim impact statements described the impact the attack had on the family, court heard the victim has no memory of the incident, and she was left permanently brain damaged so her family said they have chosen not to tell her what happened

The accused also spoke in court, saying “I made bad decisions that night in 2012. I’m sorry. I hope my life doesn’t turn back that way again.”

With time served, the man has six more years remaining in his sentence.
