An area at the Edmonton International Airport was evacuated after a man allegedly sprayed some bear spray on himself in a waiting area Saturday night.

Airport RCMP located a man coming out of a washroom suffering from bear spray side-effects at approximately 8:30 p.m.

After investigators interviewed the man and reviewed airport footage, they determined the man found the bear spray can in a liquids disposal at the check-in area. Mounties said the man was unaware of what the liquid was and “inadvertently released some of the spray onto himself and into the air.”

"I don't know why you would remove something out of the disposal bin and then play with it and accidentally spray it out," Cpl. Curtis Peters said. "To me that's a little bit foolish."

Three adults and one child were treated for exposure to bear spray. A portion of the airport was evacuated, which caused some disruption to airport operations.

RCMP said this was not a criminal act and charges are not anticipated.
