Rachel Notley has been elected as the new leader of the Alberta’s NDPs.

In Saturday’s election, three candidates were vying to replace party leader Brian Mason who served as the Party’s leader for the last decade.

David Eggen, Rod Loyola and Rachel Notley had been campaigning since Mason announced in April he would be stepping down.

Notley won 70 per cent of the 3,589 votes cast by party members.

She is the daughter of former NDP leader Grant Notley and first ran for the New Democrats in 2008 and was re-elected in 2012.

Notley was raised in Fairview, Alberta and has a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of Alberta. She also holds a law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto.

Notley said she will focus on preparing NDP candidates for the upcoming byelections as well as the next provincial election in 2016.
