A day after officials at Alberta Health Services (AHS) decided to postpone nearly two dozen surgeries at three Edmonton facilities, AHS decided to move ahead with scheduled procedures.

AHS said 23 surgical procedures at the Walter C MacKenzie Health Sciences Centre, which includes the University of Alberta Hospital, the Mazankowski Alberta Heart institute and the Stollery Children’s Hospital were postponed Monday, May 4, after AHS received a threatening e-mail.

An AHS spokesperson said Tuesday that the wording in the e-mail, received by an AHS staff member, potentially threatened the safety of some of their operating room equipment.

The Edmonton Police Service was called in to help investigate the email.

On Tuesday, AHS said the decision had been made to proceed with scheduled surgeries and procedures at the three facilities in the wake of an investigation and additional safety procedures.

Officials said in addition to existing procedures to ensure doctors and technicians routinely check their equipment, additional precautionary assessments of main operating room equipment also took place.
