Alberta’s Superintendent of Insurance issued an advisory Monday to users over the risks of using Uber, and what users are, and are not, covered for in the case of a crash.

The province said a review of Uber’s insurance policies was recently carried out – and found issues with regulatory compliance.

Mark Prefontaine, Alberta’s Superintendent of Insurance, said drivers might believe supplemental insurance provides coverage, but that’s not the case in Alberta.

In a crash, Prefontaine said passengers might not be covered.

“They need to assure themselves when they are getting into a ride sharing vehicle that the driver has commercial coverage, and is not solely relying on policies for a personal vehicle and any combination that Uber has in place,” Prefontaine said.

Uber issued a statement in response, and said it’s working with regulators and insurers in Alberta on the insurance issue, but said every ride with the company is insured.

The province said a working group has been established to look at the regulations for all ride-for-hire services.
