Alberta’s NDP Party have been preparing for a potential spring election.
“We are pretty sure that Mr. Prentice is likely going to break his own law and call an election this spring,” Party leader, Rachel Notley told media following her address at Saturday’s council meeting in Edmonton.
She also criticized Premier Jim Prentice for being “coy” about his upcoming plans.
“If he plans on having an election this spring because he is worried about the fiscal situation then he should be upfront with Albertans now.”
Notley said she believes many Albertans have been more receptive to her party’s message over the past few months.
“The Conservatives are going back to their very old fashion roots from many, many years ago and in doing that they are leaving behind most Albertans who don’t see their values reflected in that old party.
“Those folks are listening to our message and nodding their head pretty often that they feel that they need someone to stand up for them to protect their schools, to protect their hospitals, to make sure their parents are taken care of and their kids get a good education.”
The party will also be holding training sessions on Sunday and again on Februray 7.
According to their website they have also set up several nomination meetings throughout February.
Meanwhile, the PC Party of Alberta will soon be deciding on candidates for four more constituencies.
In a media release issued Saturday, the party’s nomination committee indicated that Edmonton-Castle Downs, Sherwood Park and Stony Plain will be voting on March 14 while Lethbridge-West will vote on March 7.
The committee has also moved up the deadline for candidate nominations in Calgary-Greenway to February 21.
Currently the constituency of Edmonton-Castle Downs is held by Thomas Lukaszuk, Sherwood Park belongs to Cathy Olesen and Stony Plain is held by Ken Lemke.
Greg Weadick is the MLA for Lethbridge West.
Both Lukaszuk and Olesen have expressed to the media their intentions to run again.
