After serving for more than seven years on Edmonton’s City Council, Amarjeet Sohi is seeking the federal Liberal Party nomination in Edmonton-Mill Woods.

Sohi was first elected to Edmonton’s City Council in 2007 – he currently represents Ward 12.

“I know this riding. I know its people. I know this city,” Sohi said in a statement. “I have proven to be a strong and effective voice on City Council and I believe I can be an effective and strong voice as a Liberal MP in Ottawa.

“Since 2006, it has been a one-way conversation: from Prime Minister Harper to Edmonton. No one has been listening to our needs.”

The 35-year Mill Woods-area resident said he will stay on council while the nomination process takes place.

If he is successful, he said he’ll take unpaid leave from council when the writ is dropped.
