RCMP in northern Alberta said a young child who was injured in a highway crash earlier this week, had succumbed to his injuries in an Edmonton hospital.

The collision happened Tuesday morning, police and emergency crews were called to the scene on the Highway 43 bypass between 102 and 100 Street in Grande Prairie at about 8:45 a.m.

Police said three vehicles were involved in the crash, initial reports suggested an eastbound vehicle had collided with two other vehicles heading in the same direction, before crossing the westbound lanes, and coming to a stop in a grassy area along 117 Avenue.

Three people, two children and the driver of the vehicle believed to have crossed the lanes were taken to hospital in the area.

RCMP said a four-year-old boy injured in the crash died at the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton Thursday morning - the little boy had been airlifted by STARS Air Ambulance to Edmonton later Tuesday morning.

The child’s name is not being released.

RCMP are investigating the crash.
