After making sure their affairs were in order, for seven months, an Edmonton couple has become the city’s newest multimillionaires after claiming their lottery jackpot that was drawn in December.

Andrea and Bill Groner officially claimed their $50,000,020.00 jackpot Tuesday, July 22 – almost exactly seven months after their quick pick Lotto Max numbers were drawn.

Their numbers were drawn December 20, 2013 – Andrea told reporters Tuesday that she found out they won two days later. She scanned her ticket at the self-service scanner in Londonderry Mall.

“I saw the amount on the screen, but I didn’t have my glasses on – but I saw a lot of numbers,” she said in a press release. “I asked the store clerk to look too. She asked how much I thought I’d won.

“I said, ‘I won the lottery’.”

That day, she waited until she got home to tell her husband, Bill.

“I had to double-check the numbers in the paper to be sure,” Bill said. “It was hard to believe!”

Now that the couple has their millions, they have a few plans as to what to do with the money.

“We have some ideas for the money,” Andrea said. “We want to help friends and family, and we have some charities in mind that we want to help.”

Officials said the ticket was purchased at the Shefield Express in Londonderry Mall – it’s the largest-ever prize won by a ticket sold in Edmonton, and the second-largest ticket won in Alberta.

Back in October, 2005, a ticket sold in Camrose won $54.3 million LOTTO 6/49 jackpot, the largest jackpot ever won in Alberta.
