The Edmonton Humane Society has stopped accepting cats, as they try to find homes for a huge influx of felines currently being cared for at the shelter.

Officials said they have reached maximum capacity for cats, and have temporarily closed its doors to healthy stray and owner-surrendered cats and kittens.

“Just to ensure they are looked after properly, we have to refrain from taking more at this time, but we’re hopeful the public will help remedy this problem and make more space for some more,” Dale Gienow with the Edmonton Humane Society said.

As of Thursday, there were 179 cats, and 250 kittens in the care of the Edmonton Humane Society.

EHS said they will still accept stray cats from outside city limits, with pressing health concerns, but are urging members of the public to contact EHS before bringing animals to the facility.
