RCMP in northern Alberta are investigating, after a collision on Highway 63 late Friday morning left a young Edmonton man dead.

Police said the collision took place at about 11:15 a.m., on Highway 63 about 2 kilometres south of Wandering River.

It’s believed a southbound SUV crossed the centre line, hitting a northbound semi-tractor trailer.

Paramedics tried to rush the driver and lone occupant of the SUV to hospital, but RCMP said he died while en route to the hospital.

The section of highway where the crash occurred was closed in both directions for several hours Friday; police said it would reopen at about 5 p.m.

Investigators are looking at determining what caused the crash; factors such as speed, alcohol or distracted driving have not been ruled out.

The deceased was only identified as an 18-year-old Edmonton man.
