The 25th edition of the Edmonton Marathon featured runners from all across Canada, a 79-year-old man completing his 100th marathon, and three first responders in full uniform raising money for charity.

Two men from Edmonton rounded out the top three behind a runner from Hamilton, Ontario, and three Calgary women took the podium in their marathon.

Evans Maiko won the men’s marathon with a 2:25:01 time, just short of the 2:23:33 course record.

“I’m so happy with my time today, a personal best for me,” Maiko said. “I came to here from Kenya in 2013 and I hope to run one day for Canada. My goal is to defend my title next year and go after the course record.”

Local runner Tom McGrath, who won the event in 2015, finished second with a time of 2:30:33.

“I would have liked to finish under the 2:30 mark, but a course doesn’t get much faster than this,” McGrath said.

On the women’s side, Melissa Kendrick won the race with a personal best under three hours – one year after finishing second.

A 79-year-old man completed his 100th marathon in the past 10 years Sunday in just under six hours and received a plaque from the provincial government.

"I am not going to quit," Roger Macmillan said. "I don't think I will get to 200, but I'll do three more this year and then we will see."

Three female first responders from police, fire and completed a half marathon in full uniform and raised $10,000 for Wounded Warrior Canada’s mental health programs. They crossed the line around the 2:30 mark.

Edmonton Marathon said 4,550 racers competed across all weekend events – the biggest participation in all 25 years.
