A year has passed since school zones with lower speed limits went into effect in Edmonton, police said they were hoping this school year sees fewer speeding tickets issued.

Edmonton Police Service officers said since school zones were enacted – 36,000 tickets were issued, and drivers have been recorded driving as fast as 90 kilometres per hour, sixty kilometres over the limit in those zones.

“We’d like to see that number drop, you know, we’d like to see zero violations in school zones, put us out of a job,” Dennis Tetreault with the Edmonton Office of Traffic Safety said.

Now, with students heading back to school, police are reminding drivers to slow down.

“For all those people who say ‘I don’t have time’, literally ten seconds is all it’s going to take to transit the area safely,” Sgt. David Green with the Edmonton Police Service said.

The fine for speeding in a school zone starts at $57, and increases depending on the speed of the vehicle.
