Four people have died and 15 have been injured following a multi-vehicle collision west of Jasper.

RCMP said the deceased included an 18-year-old man from Carvel, a 28-year old man from Spruce Grove, a 22-year old woman from Peace River and a 21-year-old man from Edmonton.

The incident happened Friday, August 14 just before 11 p.m. on Highway 16 about 16 kilometres west of the town.

“There were five vehicles involved. There was an eastbound vehicle that was in the eastbound ditch. a westbound pickup truck that was in this ditch here over on the other side of the guard rail. There were two more vehicles that were in the westbound lane and another eastbound vehicle parked on the road,” Cpl. Ryan Gardiner explained.

Investigators believe that an eastbound pickup truck collided with several oncoming vehicles including a westbound pickup.

The male driver of the eastbound pickup, two men from the westbound pickup and a woman from that vehicle were all declared deceased.

Police said five vehicles were involved in the collision and those injured were treated at nearby hospitals.

Investigators have been working to determine a cause and the highway was closed in both directions for several hours but was opened Saturday morning.

The identification of the deceased has not been released.
