Edmonton police said the investigation into an alleged assault at a Castle Downs park had wrapped up.

An EPS spokesperson told CTV News Friday that the police investigation into the alleged assault, that reportedly had taken place the previous weekend at a park in Castle Downs had ended.

Police said no charges were laid.

Back on Saturday, August 12, Ward 3 council candidate Sarmad Rasheed said he was at an event in a park in the area of 115 Street and 153 Avenue, he said organizers of the event had asked him to set up a booth there.

At the park, Rasheed said his rival, incumbent councillor Dave Loken approached him there and reportedly told him to leave – saying the councillor was “aggressive” towards him.

Rasheed filed a report with police, and Loken said in a statement he did not physically come in contact with his political rival, and said he was trying to tell Rasheed he was breaking an election bylaw by campaigning in a city-owned park.

Rasheed’s campaign released a statement after the investigation ended, saying the campaign was “happy that the matter has been resolved” and thanking police.

“It is our hope that no further confrontations occur between Mr. Rasheed and Mr. Loken. We look forward to a campaign based on platform, vision and policy, with the goal of making a better Edmonton.”

Loken released a statement later Friday afternoon, saying, in part: “I have great respect for our police service and I knew that if I trusted the process, I would be absolved.”
