Police in northern Alberta said Tuesday that a six-year-old boy and his dog were back home in a remote area, after they wandered away Monday.

Valleyview RCMP said on Monday, just after noon, officers received a report of the little boy missing from a home in the New Fish Creek area – located about 30 kilometres north of Valleyview, west of Highway 49 on Township Road 730.

Officers learned the boy, and his golden retriever aged six months old had wandered away at about 10 a.m. – and the boy’s family had been searching for them since, the family called police after they couldn’t find the boy.

The search of farm lands and a forested area continued for the next few hours – with the RCMP helicopter, four police service dogs, RCMP and civilian search teams, two helicopters from Sustainabile Resource Development in High Prairie, an air search and rescue crew from Edmonton, and dozens of trained search and rescue groups from the region, along with members of the Valleyview Fire Department, and volunteers all working to find the pair.

Finally, the boy and the dog were found at about 9 p.m. about 1.5 kilometres south of his home.

The boy was rescued and assessed by paramedics before being returned home unharmed.
