ALERT officials said Thursday that an Edmonton man, who had worked as a babysitter, was facing child exploitation charges.

Officials with the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) team arrested Jason Michael Campbell, 36, at his west Edmonton home on November 23.

Campbell is now facing charges of possessing, accessing, and distributing child pornography.

Police said the accused has provided childminding or babysitting services in Edmonton for 16 years, routinely posting advertisements on Kijiji.

The charges were laid after the RCMP’s National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre referred local investigators to allegations an Edmonton man was suspected of uploading child exploitation images to a website. ALERT was contacted on November 18, and sped up the investigation after learning the suspect was a babysitter.

ALERT said there is no evidence to suggest children in Campbell’s care were being sexually exploited, but there is evidence to suggest he was uploading child pornography while children were in his care. Campbell has been remanded in custody, and was scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
