Edmonton Police Service’s homicide detectives have been investigating after a 24-year-old man died following an alleged assault over the weekend.

Officials said Raad Hamza was discovered unconscious by officers outside The Billiard Club on 105 Street and 82 Avenue early Saturday morning.

Hamza was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and on Sunday police confirmed he had died.

Investigators said they believe Hamza was physically assaulted by two people.

“We have reason to believe the victim and two suspects were at minimum acquainted to each other and likely knew each other to some extent but we do not know what led up to the assault,” Det. Dale Johnson explained.

“There was not a fight in the bar, what happened occurred outside on the sidewalk.”

Det. Johnson said they have video evidence of the incident but police believe that at least six witnesses saw the incident and they are hoping those people will come forward with information.

“Video evidence does not replace eyewitness evidence so we would like those people to feel comfortable coming forward and not take for granted that the police will solve this without their help.”

No arrests have been made and an autopsy has been scheduled for Monday.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact police, 780-423-4567 or Crime Stoppers, 1-800-222-8477.
