The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is asking for the public's help in locating a necklace that holds the remains of a young boy.

On Friday, July 18th at around 9 a.m., police were called to the area of 113 Avenue and 86 Street for a report of an attempted vehicle theft. According to a witness, a male broke into a red and black Dodge Ram. After failing to start the vehicle, he allegedly took a necklace from the truck and fled. The suspect is described as Caucasian in his late teens or early twenties with blonde, curly hair. He was seen wearing red and white shorts.

The necklace contains the ashes of Dawson Pentecost, a 9-year-old boy who was killed in a plane crash in Manitoba on February 10, 2013. It's a cremation pendant in which the boy’s remains are contained inside a gold and silver cross. Dawson's parents moved to Edmonton just two weeks ago.

“It’s very likely that the thief had no idea about the tremendous sentimental value of this piece of jewelry,” Const. Michael Roblin of Downtown Division said in a press release. “The EPS asks the public to keep an eye out for this keepsake necklace and anyone with information about the incident is asked to come forward. It is our hope the necklace will be recovered and returned to its rightful owners, even if it is turned in anonymously.”

EPS is asking anyone with information regarding this case to contact them at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Tips can also be given to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online.
