More than a year after Edmonton Police Service officers were called to a weapons complaint, and ended up going after the fleeing suspect – a chase that ended in shots being fired by police – investigators say charges will not be laid against the officers.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team was called in to investigate an April, 2013 incident that saw police firing at an alleged suspect, and injuring one of them.

ASIRT said on April 18, 2013, at about 5:46 a.m., EPS officers were called to a west end residential area on reports of a man carrying what appeared to be a sawed-off or pistol grip shotgun. Officers responded, and tried to contain the area, but the suspect fled in a vehicle – and did not stop for police.

Officers followed the suspect on Whitemud Drive, while trying to stop the vehicle by trying to ram it, shooting at it and setting up road blocks, before the vehicle finally came to a stop west of 231 Street, with three flat tires and a disabled engine.

Six people inside the suspect vehicle were arrested by police, and a 17-year-old male passenger had been struck in the neck by a bullet fired by an officer – he was treated in hospital for minor injuries, and released.
