Edmonton police are investigating after a van crashed in the city’s southwest Tuesday afternoon, and the male driver died.

Police said just before 4 p.m. Tuesday, a van was headed northbound on 106 Street, when it went off the road at 56 Avenue, and hit a fence.

Paramedics arrived and treated, then took the 72-year-old man who was the lone occupant of the van, to hospital with unknown injuries.

The man died in hospital.

Officers were investigating the collision into Tuesday afternoon – and said speed and alcohol did not initially appear to be factors in the crash, it’s believed the driver suffered a medical episode.

Police closed the road along 106 Street from 55 Avenue and 57 Avenue, and that section of roadway was expected to remain closed until about 8 p.m. Tuesday.
