Edmonton Police released details Wednesday on a spring collision that led to the death of an 88-year-old man, and a traffic violation issued against the other driver.

Police said Southwest Division officers were called to the collision Saturday, April 22, at about 1:20 p.m., in the area of 105 Street and 77 Avenue.

Reports indicated a black car was headed east on 77 Avenue, approaching 105 Street when the driver allegedly passed a stop sign, hitting an SUV headed north on 105 Street through the intersection.

The SUV spun, jumped a nearby curb and hit a street sign, fence, and four other vehicles.

Paramedics were called, and treated then transported the 88-year-old man who was driving the SUV to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The 36-year-old woman who was driving the car was not injured.

More than a week later, on May 1, the man succumbed to his injuries due to medical complications in hospital. At his death, the EPS Major Collision Unit took over the investigation, and the case was deemed to be a traffic fatality.

Police said alcohol and speed are not believed to be factors in this crash.

The driver of the car was issued a traffic violation for failing to stop at a stop sign.
