In a statement released Friday, Alberta’s new Jobs, Skills, Training and Labour Minister said the government’s plans to increase minimum wage in the province had been set in motion.

Minister Lori Sigurdson released a statement outlining the next steps for the increase.

“The existing formula for minimum wage increases, based on the consumer price index and average weekly earnings, was inadequate,” Sigurdson’s statement said. “As such, our government will undertake targeted consultations with key stakeholders through the month of June to establish a new path forward.”

The statement went on to say the meetings will be held with associations representing employers who usually employ minimum wage workers – along with organizations focused on labour and public interest advocacy.

Sigurdson said she expects to report back by early July with more information on phased minimum wage increases she said will take effect on October 1, 2015.
