RCMP have been investigating after two suspicious house fires in less than a week.

Officials said police responded to a house fire in Spruce Grove’s Fieldstone neighbourhood around 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

Although the Spruce Grove Fire Department were able to extinguish the fire there was significant damage to the building and the neighbouring home.

There were no injuries reported as there were no one was home at the time of the fire.

“This is the second incident that we have responded to within the last week,” Cpl. Kimberly Mueller said.

Officials responded to a similar house fire around 4:15 a.m. on July 29 also in the Fieldstone neighbourhood.

The homeowners were sleeping in the residence at the time.

“I ran to the window, pulled aside the blinds and realized that the house was on fire,” Clayton Kleparchuk explained.

After his wife and daughter escaped the home Kleparchuk also ran out.

“There was a garden house, luckily, situated right beside where the fire was. So I ended up using the hose to put out the fire. I was lucky. I had it out before the fire crews came.”

The damages to his home were minimal.

“It is an inconvenience but in the grand scheme of things it could have been a lot worse,” Kleparchuk said.

However, the incidents have police concerned.

“We have had several small dumpster fires, the side garbage cans that people put out, porta-potties are being set on fire. This is something we saw last summer too,” Cpl. Muller explained.

“These fires appear to be deliberately set in that they were, in most cases, set in garbage cans. There is a similar pattern here to what we are seeing.”

Cpl. Muller has encouraged members of the public to contact police about any suspicious activity they witness.

“No tip is too small. I can’t stress that enough.”

She also assured residents that there will be more patrols on the streets by RCMP and enforcement officers, with some members of the fire department and EMS teams helping out.
