Police in central Alberta and officials with the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) said a search was underway to find an inmate who escaped from the minimum security unit at the Bowden Institution.

According to the CSC, Sylvain Martin, 50, was not accounted for during the 10:30 p.m. count at the minimum security unit of the Bowden Institution.

Officials said they immediately contacted RCMP at the Innisfail detachment, who issued a warrant for his arrest.

CSC officials said Martin is described as:

  • About 165 cm (5’5”) tall
  • Weighing about 67 kg (148 lbs)
  • Fair complexion
  • Blue eyes
  • Auburn hair
  • Has scars on his lower back and his eyes
  • Tattoos on his right forearm, upper back and lower back

Officials said he is serving a sentence of nine years, 11 months and 17 days for fraud, obstructing a police or peace officer, personation with intent to gain advantage, failure to comply with a probation order, possession of a schedule 1 substance, uttering forged documents and forgery.

The CSC and RCMP are investigating, and working to find Martin.
