The RCMP and the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) are warning Albertans about an ongoing scam in which taxpayers across the country receive phone calls or emails from individuals impersonating CRA employees.

Alberta RCMP said they’ve received numerous complaints from Albertans being targeted by the scam.

Consort RCMP have issued a warrant for a male phoning and identifying himself as a police officer for Revenue Canada. The male suspect allegedly has been informing people in the Central Alberta village that they owe money for taxes.

RCMP say scammers are trying to threaten taxpayers with jail time if they do not take immediate action and provide personal or financial information. Police are urging those who receive calls to not send money or release any personal information to these scammers.

Anyone who believes they may have been victimized by this scam or who has given out personal or financial information in error is advised to contact their local police service and their financial institution.

If you live in the Consort area and have been affected by a phone scam, you can contact RCMP at (403) 577-3001.
