The Alberta Government is investing $2 million per year for three years for the Red Deer airport expansion project.

Construction includes a runway extension so that larger commercial airplanes can land.

“The airport expansion will create good jobs, attract new business opportunities and help make our province more economically diverse,’ said Minister of Municipal Affairs, Deron Bilous.

Red Deer is hosting the 2019 Canada Winter Games and Mayor Tara Veer hopes that the province’s contribution will ensure the airport is ready.

“Not only will this airport expansion ensure Red Deer is prepared to host the Games, it will solidify our trade and distribution capacity beyond the game,” said Veer.

The Red Deer airport has had a 179 per cent increase in scheduled passengers over the last four years.

The city of Red Deer and Red Deer county are each contributing $1.75 million.
