Officials with the City of Edmonton said Tuesday morning that a seasonal parking ban had been declared for the city, effective late Tuesday night.

As of 11 p.m. Tuesday, a seasonal parking ban will be in place on priority routes – meaning drivers will not be allowed to park on residential bus routes until the ban is lifted.

Vehicles still parked on those routes after 11 p.m. Tuesday will be subject to tagging and towing.

The decision to call a parking ban was made after the city and surrounding area was hit with a major snowfall Monday.

City officials said crews started working to clear roads Monday afternoon, and the sanding and plowing work continued around the clock.

More than 200 pieces of City and hired equipment was on city streets overnight, on Tuesday morning, about 178 pieces of equipment were working on the roads.

Due to traffic volume, officials said some bus routes were experiencing 15 to 30 minute delays.

Police said between 6 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, officers responded to a number of collisions throughout Edmonton – of those, two resulted in injuries, ten resulted in property damage, and seven were hit-and-run crashes. Between 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., police said seven hit and runs were reported, along with two injury collisions and another seven property damage crashes.

EPS officials were reminding motorists to drive defensively, and to take their time on city streets, and to give extra space to snow removal crews.
