Two people had to be taken to hospital, after a Sunday evening fire broke out in the Alberta Avenue neighbourhood.

Edmonton police officers were first to arrive on the scene around 7:30 p.m. They evacuated three people from the main floor of a residence near the corner of 119 Avenue and 94 Street.

About 20 firefighters responded and officials say, because of intense smoke in the duplex building, crews had a difficult time finding the flames. That smoke forced one man to seek medical attention.

There's been no word on the condition of a second person who went to hospital, but it's believed to have also been for precautionary reasons.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
