Edmonton Police said Monday that a stolen pendant, containing the ashes of a young boy was back in the hands of his family.

Police said the pendant, containing the ashes of Dawson Pentecost, 9 – that was stolen on July 18, when a suspect broke into a pickup truck parked in the area of 113 Avenue and 86 Street.

Officers went public with the story on July 22.

On Monday, police said the pendant was turned in to police on July 23 after it was found in downtown Edmonton by an anonymous resident – the pendant was then returned to the family July 27.

Police said the pendant had been damaged, and an unnamed Edmonton funeral home has offered to replace it at no cost to the family.

EPS said no further information would be released, out of respect for the family.
