One man has died following a dirt bike collision in central Alberta.

RCMP said they responded to the incident just after 6 a.m. behind Lodge Place in Sylvan Lake.

Officers found two damaged dirt bikes and two seriously injured men.

A 26-year-old man from Sylvan Lake was declared deceased at the scene.

STARS Air Ambulance took the second patient, a 27-year-old Sylvan Lake man, to the University of Alberta hospital in Edmonton with critical injuries.

No names have been released.

Police said they suspect alcohol and drugs played a factor in the collision and charges were pending.

They have also said they believe neither man was wearing protective gear nor were the bikes registered or street legal.

Officials from Red Deer have been helping with the investigation.
